Sidewalk Film Festival is produced by the Alabama Moving Image Association, a federally recognized 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to inspire, encourage and support filmgoers, the city of Birmingham and the filmmaking community. In addition to hosting the annual film festival, we host monthly networking and educational events, a monthly documentary series, short film and screenwriting competitions, manage a youth board and a variety of other year-round programs.

Tickets sales to our events cover approximately 1/3 of our annual operating cash budget, so we depend on corporate sponsors, grant-making organizations and individuals like you to survive. if you’d like to know more about supporting Sidewalk, please contact us at sidewalk@sidewalkfest.com.

Using Sched.org as our primary scheduling tool, we are happy to offer four different ways to view this year’s lineup. By hovering your cursor over the "Schedule" tab below, you can take your pick of a Simple, Expanded, Grid, or By Venue view.

SHOUT Opening Night: Studio 54 sponsored by Saturn - SOLD OUT
dir. Matt Tyrnauer
98 min
Documentary
USA

Studio 54 was the epicenter of 70s hedonism, a place that not only redefined the nightclub, but also came to symbolize an entire era. Its co-owners, introverted straight Ian Schrager and extroverted gay Steve Rubell, seemed to come out of nowhere to suddenly preside over a new kind of New York society - one in which being queer was cool. Now, almost 40 years after the velvet rope was first slung across the club's hallowed threshold, a feature documentary tells the real story behind the greatest club of all time.

Documentary
Directed By Theo Love
Run Time 83 Minutes
USA

Opening Night
A victim of the Great Recession, Florida family man, Rodney Hyden, hears a fantastical tale that he thinks just might be the answer to his ever-mounting debt. A Caribbean Island with buried treasure in the form of $2-million worth of cocaine and a verbal treasure map virtually pointing to the locale of the fortune. What
could it possibly hurt to try and find the loot and dig it up? While a cautionary tale of the trappings of the American dream and the story of good-intentions-gone-bad, the docu-narrative WHITE TIDE is also a heartening and fun as heck roller coaster ride of a film. The stylish, lager-than-life, action- heist-thriller-documentary will kick Sidewalk weekend off in the true spirit of fantastical Southern storytelling. Multi-year Sidewalk Film Festival alums, director Theo Love and producer Bryan Storkel, along with subject Rodney Hyden and Alabama native Jamie Hyden, are scheduled to join us for opening night. Party and treasure hunt to follow the screening.

Narrative
Directed By Augustine Frizzell
Run Time 85 Minutes
USA

Best friends Jessie and Angela want nothing more than to get out of their hot Texas town and sit by the ocean with donuts in hand. Being 17, broke and on the verge of eviction, a summer beach trip is not that simple of a goal, but nothing is going to stop them from trying. Gross-out comedy meets high-energy manifesto, NEVER GOIN’ BACK is beyond a love letter to female friendship, it’s a middle-finger declaration that nothing else is nearly as important.

A brother and sister turn their late grandmother’s house into an archaeological excavation site. In so doing, they create a stylized arrangement of shapes and colors, a ghost story of American culture, as well as a meditation on the authorship and purpose of archives.

The subsequent trial had international repercussions, rocking the relationship between America and the Philippines and sparking protests over transphobia and the neo colonial mindset of the U.S. military. This shocking documentary examines the impunity with which American soldiers are permitted to behave in the Philippines — for which the trans community has paid a heavy and tragic toll.

Similar to the backstory regarding The Wolf Pack, Moselle randomly met the core cast of non-actors on a train. She enlisted them for a short film, expanding the relationship for Skate Kitchen.  A candid urban coming-of-age tale, the film also explores the challenges faced by young women moving within unavoidable male-centric spaces and the incredible importance of female friendship in modern America.

Lisa (Regina Hall) is an overworked manager at regional, just-off-the-interstate Hooters knock-off, Double Whammies. She navigates the usual challenges of running a sports bar while being underappreciated and second-guessed. A break-in and employee in a bad relationship raise the stakes on the usual hokum. Leading the cast, Hall’s character balances tolerance and strength with building fury as she navigates the unavoidable culture of misogyny. Yet her most driving trait, like the undercurrent of the film, is simple kindness. SUPPORT THE GIRLS sub-textually raises the questions: what is strength and what is success, yet, all-the-while, delivers a super funny alt-comedy.

Rodents of Unusual Size
Documentary
Directed By Chris Metzler
Run Time 71 Minutes

Life & Liberty

A story about giant swamp rats invading coastal towns sounds more like the plot of a sci-fi movie than a documentary. But RODENTS OF UNUSUAL SIZE is a true tale, one known well by the millions who reside in southern Louisiana. The rodents, who sport webbed feet and large orange teeth, are known as nutria. Introduced to the area during the Depression, importers believed their fur could be a source of income. Turns out, they were wrong.

Demoted police officer Asger (Jakob Cedergren) bides his time as an emergency dispatcher, begrudgingly fielding calls. As his shift nears its end a disturbing call comes in... As mystery unravels and complicates, the film not only questions the perception and subsequent actions of our main character, but also flips such ambiguity back on its audience. A one-location indie, virtually a one-hander and playing out in real time, The Guilty is an edge-of-the-seat, shockingly effective cinematic feat of a thriller.

But when he uncovers the world of industrial musicals — original stage productions composed and conducted solely for trade show audiences — he is drawn into a catchy world of show tunes about bathrooms, tractors and fiberglass, and what first starts as ironic enjoyment turns into a genuine attempt to preserve these once-disposable tunes for posterity.

SHOUT

Madeleine Olnek’s portrait of Emily Dickinson (Molly Shannon) casts light on the poet’s intense romance with women and words, and in doing so subverts the notions of biography and history entire. The result is a sexy, breathless, absurdist, and very cinematic literary romp. Interpretation alters our perception, turning seemingly dusty poetry into unspeakable sexual innuendo. “I taste a liquor never brewed –”, Dickinson whispers to her lover Susan – affirming that her lines are truly about that.

Bloody Birthday
Narrative
Directed By Ed Hunt
85 Minutes
USA

It’s Sidewalk’s 20th and what better way to celebrate than with director Ed Hunt’s 1981 cult classic slasher BLOODY BIRTHDAY? Unfortunate for their family and friends, three children were born at the height of a lunar eclipse. Presumably because of the unfortunate timing of their arrival, on their 10th birthday the youngsters are sparked to set out on a murderous spree. Using weapons ranging from shovels to refrigerators the pre-teens kill anyone and everyone who even mildly annoy them. There will be blood (and cake)!

Directed By Isabella Eklöf
Run Time 90 Minutes
Denmark/Netherlands/Sweden

Kingpin Michael and his girlfriend Sacha vacation with their mob family in Turkey. Ice cream outings and poolside afternoons are frequently interrupted by criminal upsets, but when Sacha befriends a fellow vacationer things go way off course. HOLIDAY is a slap in the face of a film. In poignant juxtaposition, verminous content is strung across gorgeously sterile cinematography. Challenging, intensely relevant, and provocative as hell – the film doesn’t just comment on the times, it rubs the audience’s face in them, holding us all responsible. Size XXXL trigger warning.

From the confines of this retirement dreamscape, Alvin recounts his experiences, from more than forty years earlier, of writing and producing a bizarre softcore porn film called Fongaluli. It tells the story of a scientist who discovers a rare plant leaf that temporarily transforms his pet lobster into a beautiful woman, presenting new possibilities for interbreeding.

Through often-uncomfortable camera angles, a beautiful screenplay, and a black and white memoir-esque style, director Yen Tan paints an intimate portrait of a family dealing (and not dealing) with their personal HIV/AIDS story. It might be the actors' subtle performance or possibly that the film's narrow focus is unwaveringly personal in scope, but, regardless, 1985 is a gripping portrayal of the toll that this crisis had - and continues to have - on individual people.

A great documentary can give you an inside glimpse into a community; reveal it’s struggles, it’s victories, and the deep meaning it gives to its members. UNITED SKATES does this for the African American roller-skating community, which in the face of racism, a volatile economy, and waning general interest in the sport,
has persevered to the present day. In addition, the documentary is an amazingly fun look at the multiple styles of roller-skating and the incredible talent involved in the sport.

Rudy and Rennie North were happily enjoying their retirement years in their upscale Las Vegas community. Then a stranger arrived, identified herself as their new guardian and confiscated their lives. The North’s story, among others, is profiled in THE GUARDIANS, a documentary that shines light on the legal kidnapping of elderly people. Using court orders, professional for-profit guardians are able to take control of individuals’ healthcare and financial decisions, exerting complete authority, separating individuals from friends, families and spouses and stealing entire estates.

Encore: Wild Nights With Emily
Directed by Madeleine Olnek
USA | 84 Minutes
Saturday | 8:40 PM
Museum of Art

Madeleine Olnek’s portrait of Emily Dickinson (Molly Shannon) casts light on the poet’s intense romance with women and words, and in doing so subverts the notions of biography and history entire. The result is a sexy, breathless, absurdist, and very cinematic literary romp. Interpretation alters our perception, turning seemingly dusty poetry into unspeakable sexual innuendo. “I taste a liquor never brewed—”, Dickinson whispers to her lover Susan—affirming that her lines are truly about that.

File this under advanced storytelling. In 1917, copper miners in Bisbee, Arizona staged a strike that was met with extreme resistance. Fearing that the shutdown would hinder the war effort overseas, thousands of deputized men rounded up the 1100 plus workers, put them on a train bound for New Mexico, and left them to die in the desert. 100 years later, filmmakers and the town’s citizens stage a fiercely dramatic reenactment of events in an effort for reconciliation and to shed light on the largely unspoken tragedy.

In 2012 the players of a Steubenville, Ohio football team raped a female teenage classmate. The circumstances surrounding the crime are beyond disturbing. However, even more unsettling is what followed the incident – a town that ignored the crime, covered it up and blamed the victim. Bravely, by scouring social media, amateur crime blogger, Alex Goddard, was able to uncover the horrific details. ROLL RED ROLL skillfully recounts the crime and its circumstances and in so doing investigates rape culture, the American sports cult mentality and dangerous, toxic masculinity.

From the start MADELINE’S MADELINE promises the audience a never before seen cinematic experience. With flashing shallow depth of field scenes, including POV vantage points of cats and turtles, the cast and plot are one and the same. Set amongst a theater company’s latest, all-inclusive, collaborative offering, MADELINE’S MADELINE is a jarring cinematic masterpiece. The film is a wholly original exploration of what happens when the intersection of self-delusion and utter brilliance collide.

SHOUT: Closing Night

“I wanna be a modern Michelangelo!” Matt Smith (best known for DOCTOR WHO) plays Robert Mapplethorpe, whose pursuit of light and dark – which curves and bulges out of his iconic, erotic photography – is the drama of this stylish biopic: a variety of film styles and photographs trace the young man’s journey into art, from his fateful encounters with Patti Smith and the Chelsea Hotel, to stardom and death by AIDS. One might say that with Mapplethorpe, America reached sexual maturity.

Take THE BIG CHILL, swap out its sentimentality for absurd humor and nervous energy, and you’d and have something like this fresh indie comedy. Here, a group of friends reunite at a coastal vacation home for a weekend of relaxing and catching up. Things don’t go as planned and the place turns into a pressure cooker waiting to explode. Featuring a cast of New York improv actors, the film straddles the line of inspired and stupid comedy that had me LOL’ing many times over.

Narrative
Directed By Onur Tukel
Run Time 85 Minutes

In THE MISOGYNISTS, Cameron, the worst nightmare of a Trump supporter, celebrates his candidate’s unexpected victory while striving to make sense of it all. A surprising number of characters from across the political and ethnic spectrum happen by the celebratory hotel suite on election night, 2016. THE MISOGYNISTS is a partisan comedy in the sense that there are no winners here. Laughing beats crying, so consider this one a double Scotch straight from the hotel mini-bar to help ‘cure’ your still-lingering post-election hangover.

Sometimes the engineers of the future don’t always get the glory. Such was the case of the visionaries at General Magic, in which former Apple technicians imagined a future filled with pocket-sized personal computers accessing a network via cellular data. Mired in development delays, their initial device was a catastrophic failure. But this documentary lovingly profiles the talented minds whose imaginations changed the world, and details the path from General Magic to the smartphones in all our pockets.
