For the first half of the twentieth century, a spiritual leader who called himself Father Divine led an integrated congregation and was an important voice calling for racial harmony amid the Great Depression. Despite his prominence, today he is largely forgotten — but his remaining followers, now mostly elderly, still live in a secluded manor, adhering to his preaching. FATHERS KINGDOM shines a light on this controversial cult leader whose words still inspire a dwindling few.

Accepting the warped societal norms of vicious surroundings takes the spotlight in this documentary. MAN ON FIRE is centered on the 2014 sacrificial suicide of preacher Charles Moore. The 79-year-old preacher returned to his hometown in Texas to execute a brutal self-immolation. Moore left only a rough outline
regarding his suicide, a note on the dashboard of his car. The documentary examines the problems of dealing with racial bigotry in Everywhere, America.

Rodents of Unusual Size
Documentary
Directed By Chris Metzler
Run Time 71 Minutes
USA
Life & Liberty

A story about giant swamp rats invading coastal towns sounds more like the plot of a sci-fi movie than a documentary. But RODENTS OF UNUSUAL SIZE is a true tale, one known well by the millions who reside in southern Louisiana. The rodents, who sport webbed feet and large orange teeth, are known as nutria. Introduced to the area during the Depression, importers believed their fur could be a source of income. Turns out, they were wrong.

In 1970 the Dallas Cowboy’s ushered in the phenomenon of the modern NFL cheerleader. The San Diego Chargettes, Chicago Honey Bears, and LA Embraceable Ewes quickly followed. Despite the revenue generated by the new-era cheerleader, positions were mostly unpaid. Playboy entered the scene, offering compensation, but when several Chargettes posed for the magazine they were fired for such. SIDELINED recounts the untold, controversial (and maddening) story. The short documentary screens with SPECTRUMS: LEEOZ, a thought-provoking portrait of amazing Israeli trans woman, Leeoz.

A great documentary can give you an inside glimpse into a community; reveal it’s struggles, it’s victories, and the deep meaning it gives to its members. UNITED SKATES does this for the African American roller-skating community, which in the face of racism, a volatile economy, and waning general interest in the sport,
has persevered to the present day. In addition, the documentary is an amazingly fun look at the multiple styles of roller-skating and the incredible talent involved in the sport.

In 2012 the players of a Steubenville, Ohio football team raped a female teenage classmate. The circumstances surrounding the crime are beyond disturbing. However, even more unsettling is what followed the incident – a town that ignored the crime, covered it up and blamed the victim. Bravely, by scouring social media, amateur crime blogger, Alex Goddard, was able to uncover the horrific details. ROLL RED ROLL skillfully recounts the crime and its circumstances and in so doing investigates rape culture, the American sports cult mentality and dangerous, toxic masculinity.
